Understanding and Supporting the LGBTQIA2S+ Community

What is PRIDE? What contributions have LGBTQIA+ people made to our world? What defines the culture? Do you know and understand the history of the Gay Rights Movement? What will happen to gay marriage post-Roe? What does the ‘+’ or the ‘Q’ in the title of this training mean? This training will develop and enrich your knowledge of the LGBTQ+ culture, community and share the history of the struggles faced. We will examine its social movements and advocacy from a historical lens, beginning in the 19th century to present day. We will explore today's political and community environment and learn the 'lingo' to gain an understanding of personal identity development, the coming out process, and the supportive steps you can take to support the community.

Learning Objectives:

1.Learn and understand the language used by and with the LGBTQIA2S+ community to enhance cultural competence and provide an inclusive environment within one’s organization.

2.Develop and enrich your knowledge of the development of an LGBTQIA2S+ identity development, to better inform your professional practice.

3.Learn the history of the LGBTQIA2S+ Community and cultural movement to gain insight into the development and the struggles sometimes faced by members of the community.

4. Examine personal biases, and social constructs in our daily living and work in the helping professions; and reflect on improving one's personal and professional inclusive excellence.

Upon completion of this course attendees will earn 2.5 Category I Contact Hours, including 2.5 LGBTQ Hours, meeting the DC Board of Social Work requirement of 2 hours of LGBTQ training.
