They also serve clients in every DC ward and work setting, as well as in the DC metropolitan area such as Northern Virginia and nearby Maryland.

Healthy DC Plan & Medicaid Coverage Update

As of January 1, 2026, approximately 25,000 adult DC residents will lose Medicaid coverage due to updated income eligibility requirements. This represents nearly 9% of DC’s current Medicaid population (286,289 residents). Most of these individuals will be automatically enrolled in the new Healthy DC Plan, which includes no premiums or cost-sharing.

Three insurance providers will manage coverage under this plan:

  • CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield

  • AmeriHealth Caritas

  • MedStar Family Choice

Residents currently enrolled in:

  • Wellpoint DC Medicaid will be moved to CareFirst’s Healthy DC Plan.

  • AmeriHealth Caritas and MedStar will remain with their current provider under the new Healthy DC Plan.

All plan transitions will be administered through DC’s Health Benefit Exchange.

We recommend that you consider contacting the insurance carriers directly to inquire about reimbursement rates and to confirm your in-network status under the new Healthy DC Plan.
