This workshop will provide social workers with foundational information about working with clients who have had abortions. Attendees will learn about the myths and facts about the relationships between abortions, mental health, and emotions, as well as receive a framework through which to understand their clients’ experiences. Attendees will also reflect on their own abortion-related values, practice applying concepts to exemplar abortion stories, and identify and vet additional supportive resources for their clients. This workshop will also include a discussion of legal and ethical considerations.

This course fulfills the training requirement mandated by the Virginia Board of Social Work to provide clinical supervision for LCSW candidates. The Virginia Board of Counseling updated their regulations for LPC and LMFT licensure, however, now stating: 

• For LPC and LMFT licensure, your supervisor must hold an active, unrestricted license as a LPC or LMFT only, in the jurisdiction where the supervision is being provided. At least 100 of the supervision hours must be supervised by a LPC. **Previously approved supervisors who are substance abuse treatment practitioners, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, or psychiatrists can provide supervision until August 24, 2017. 

Course Description:       

This comprehensive seminar addresses the most critical issues for the clinical supervisor in social work. It provides an overview of supervision that is useful both for new supervisors and those wishing to refresh their supervision skills. Through presentation, large group and small group discussions, the following aspects of supervision will be explored:

• The purpose, role, and function of supervision;
• Theories and models of supervision;
• Oversight and guidance of supervisees, who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clients;
• Individual and group supervision facilitation;
• Parallel process and the importance of modeling strengths-based principles in supervision; and
• Ethical issues that arise in supervision.

• Understanding the function of supervision and the role of the supervisor;
• Discussing various theories and approaches that are useful when supervising individuals or groups of supervisees; and

Oftentimes after members take our popular Foundations of Supervision course and begin supervising LCSW candidates, new questions come up.

• How do I navigate differences in opinion when my supervisee and I practice different modalities?

• What if my supervisee and I disagree on an approach due to our cultural differences?

Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) offer valuable treatment strategies to assist clients in enhancing their lives.  During this workshop, numerous physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral benefits of animal-assisted intervention will be discussed. The presenter will provide attendees with information on types of AAI with various populations and offer specific treatment ideas for working with children through older adults.  Practical knowledge of interventions and implementation with individuals and groups will be shared. Specific applications for treatment settings including mental health, forensic, schools and nursing homes will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 

When both days are taken together, this course fulfills the 14 hour training requirement mandated by the Virginia Board of Social Work to provide clinical supervision for LCSW candidates. The Virginia Board of Counseling requires 20 hours of approved training to supervise LPC candidates.  Participants may register for ONE Day of the training to supplement another course if they wish. *Participants who have previously taken a 14-hour course from NASW-VA (within the last calendar year) and wish to take an additional one-day course may qualify for a discounted one-day registration rate. This training will be based on the contents of Dr. Srabstein’s recently published book “Bullying, Impact on Health and Beyond” Oxford University Press, 2024. The goal is to promote an understanding of the wide range of health risks associated with bullying.
