Course Description

As artificial intelligence tools become increasingly integrated into clinical documentation, social workers and other mental health professionals face new ethical considerations related to confidentiality, informed consent, data privacy, clinical judgment, record integrity, bias, and professional responsibility. While AI-assisted documentation tools may offer efficiencies and reduce administrative burden, their use requires careful ethical evaluation and transparent decision-making.

Grounded in the NASW Code of Ethics, HIPAA considerations, and ethical decision-making models, this training equips participants to navigate the evolving landscape of AI-assisted note-taking in clinical practice. Through case examples, reflective discussion, and practical application, attendees will examine how AI intersects with responsibilities to clients, agencies, records, and the profession.

Using a trauma-informed and accessible approach, participants will explore real-world scenarios and apply an ethical decision-making framework to AI-related documentation challenges. The training will also provide guidance for developing ethical AI documentation practices, supervision protocols, and agency policies that prioritize client-centered care and human clinical oversight.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify ethical risks associated with AI-assisted note-taking, including confidentiality, informed consent, bias, and documentation integrity.

2. Apply an ethical decision-making model to AI-related documentation dilemmas in clinical practice.
