Ethical Considerations for Social Workers Working With Aging Populations

Ethical Considerations for Social Workers Working with Aging Populations

This course is designed for social workers and other professionals who engage with aging populations e.g., psychologist, therapists, health care workers etc. This course will emphasize ethical challenges and responsibilities that are imperative to this field. Participants will explore the core principles of social work ethics including respect for client autonomy, confidentiality, and the promotion of social justice through the lens of aging. The course will cover key ethical dilemmas that arise in the context of elder care, such as issues related to capacity, consent, elder abuse, and end-of-life decision-making. Special attention will be given to navigating the complexities of working with older adults who may experience diminished cognitive or physical functioning, and the ethical obligation to balance the client’s rights with the need for protective interventions. By examining case studies and ethical frameworks, social workers will develop the skills necessary to make informed, ethical decisions while respecting the dignity, values, and diversity of older adults. Upon completion, participants will be better equipped to uphold professional ethics and provide culturally competent and ethically sound services to the aging population.

Learning goals and objectives will include:

  1. Identify and Apply Social Work Ethical Principles
  2. Recognize Ethical Challenges in Working with Older Adults
  3. Balance Autonomy and Protection
  4. Navigate End-of-Life Issues
  5. Promote Culturally Competent and Inclusive Practices
  6. Enhance Ethical Decision-Making Skills

Presenter
Dr. Vicki Johnson, PsyD, LCP, LCSW

Dr. Vicki is a native of Dallas, Texas. She has always enjoyed giving quick advice to help others. After marrying her college sweetheart and moving to Fort Benning, Georgia to start her husband’s army career, Dr. Vicki started volunteering with the Family Advocacy Program on post. She quickly received professional mentoring from other clinical social workers. This mentoring led her to pursue a graduate degree in social work. Dr. Vicki Johnson received a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) from the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. She later received a Doctorate in Psychology, PsyD from the American School of Professional Psychology, Washington, DC Campus. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed clinical social worker. She has extensive experience working with PTSD and other anxiety disorders, combat stress related reactions, mood disorders, trauma, bereavement complications and intimate violent relationships. Dr. Vicki works extensively with couples and families in crisis.

In her own family, she has been through several deployments because of her husband’s commitment to serving our country. In response, to his service Dr. Vicki started writing an advice column “Ask Ms. Vicki” and “Dear Ms. Vicki” that appeared in several military newspapers, military.com and the Washington Times. She was named “The Military Dear Abby”. Dr. Vicki was featured as a guest expert for mental health on several media television and radio to include CNN, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, and CBS Morning Show. Her short term plan is to become a recurring guest expert featuring special segments on mental health and family wellness topics for cable news markets and morning shows.
